In an effort to increase minority involvement in the party, as well as awareness of the issues at hand, the organization partnered with the Paisanos of East Texas, a volunteer organization composed mostly of local hispanic college students, to put on a local Cinco De Mayo Festival.
The festival took place on Saturday, May 2nd, the same day as the Pacquiao/Mayweather fight and streamed the fight live for free to increase attendance. Additionally, a 5k was hosted on collaboration with a local Burger king.
WOHSR members volunteered to work Friday afternoon through Saturday night and helped by putting up signs, setting up tables, moving cinderblocks as barriers and just general preparations on Friday night. On Saturday, the students showed up early to work the 5k and then work the rest of the festival as the day went on.
The event succeeded in gaining the organization some recognition among the local hispanic population as well as creating a partnership between the WOHSR and the Paisanos of East Texas.
