While many students took to the beaches or the T.V. this Spring Break, two of our students got the opportunity to head to the state capitol in Austin and gain some insight on its legislative processes.
The two, Zach Hellen and Cade Palmer, individually sought out the opportunity with the local state representative David Simpson as representatives of this organization. The volunteer internship took place at an opportune time for it came barely a week after Representative introduced his locally dubbed “Marijuana Bill.” In this bill, Simpson proposed a total and sweeping legalization of marijuana in Texas.
While the students did not particularly agree with the bill, they attended the office at perhaps its most busy time since its creation. They saw a representative’s obligations to his district as well as to the business to the capital business.
As interns, the two had the opportunity to sit in on lobbyist meetings, revise bills, engage in bill discussion, watch legislative sessions, and enjoy a nearly free reign access of the capital.
As the week ended, the two also secured volunteer positions of Representative Simpson’s reelection campaign. The volunteer activities will take place this coming summer through the November election.
